Unattended cooking results in smoke damage to apartment

COLUMBIA, MO (June 17, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
2:16 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, to 2900 Lawnridge Court, Apartment B, for
a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found light smoke coming from the third floor
windows of a six-unit apartment building. No one was home and fire crews
forced entry into the apartment. Upon entry, crews discovered a pan of
food had been left unattended on the stove. The apartment suffered minor
smoke damage throughout. There were no injuries and damage is estimated
at $500.

The building is owned by Arendt Management.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department have determined the
cause was unattended cooking.

Residents are reminded to ensure that all food items have been removed
from cooking appliances, and those appliances have been turned off,
prior to leaving your home.
