Columbia firefighters battle two structure fires and extrication
accident

COLUMBIA, MO (June 28, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
9:09 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, to 711 Hulen Drive, Apartment 4, for a
report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and entered the building where they found moderate
smoke and a small fire in the living room of the apartment. Fire crews
quickly extinguished the fire, which was contained to carpeting and
furniture in the living room. When fire crews arrived, the sole occupant
of the apartment was still inside and was removed by fire department
personnel. There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $2,000. The
building is owned by Newton Riley, of Columbia.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department have determined the
cause of the fire was careless smoking.

Five Columbia Fire Department apparatus and 19 personnel responded to
this incident.

While responding to Hulen Drive, Columbia firefighters were called at
9:14 p.m. to the intersection of Paris Road and Whitegate Drive for a
report of a two-vehicle accident with one person trapped.

Firefighters found a two-vehicle "T-bone" type accident with heavy
damage to the vehicles. Fire crews worked for approximately 15 minutes
to free the trapped victim. The victim was transported to University
Hospital with serious injuries.

While Columbia fire crews were still working at the scenes on Hulen
Drive and Paris Road, a second structure fire was reported at 2002
Hanover Blvd.

Firefighters were called at 9:57 p.m. to 2002 Hanover Blvd. for a
report of a structure fire, after a motorist discovered smoke coming
from the home and alerted neighbors, who called 9-1-1.

Firefighters arrived and found moderate smoke coming from the roof of
the home, owned by Jeff and Jennifer Colborn. Fire crews entered the
home and discovered flames in the garage and attic. A search of the
structure confirmed no one was home during the fire. Fire crews used
thermal imaging cameras to ensure there were no hidden fires or hot
spots throughout the rest of the home. Fire crews contained the fire to
the garage and attic of the home. The rest of the home suffered smoke
damage throughout.

A pet Bulldog was located inside the home and removed by fire crews;
the pet was not injured.

There were no injuries and damage is initially estimated at $25,000.

Seven Columbia Fire Department apparatus and 23 personnel responded to
this incident.
