City of Columbia volunteer appreciation event will be held
Thursday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia will recognize the efforts
of the hundreds of volunteers who have contributed to the city at a
reception on Thursday, March 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cosmo
Community Center, 1517 Burlington St.
Mayor Darwin Hindman is scheduled to share greetings with
volunteers and will recognize the city’s volunteers of the month for
2007. The event will be emceed by Ray Beck, city manager emeritus.
“Volunteers make a tremendous difference for our community,”
said Leigh Britt, volunteer coordinator for the city of Columbia.
“Citizens serve our city in dozens of ways and make our community a
better place to live. Volunteering is a rewarding experience for those
who get involved.”
Volunteers serve the city in numerous ways, including
beautifying streets, picking up litter, teaching the public about
recycling, helping at festivals and special events, and keeping the
community safe. Volunteers also assist the city in preparing for
disasters, maintaining parks and assisting with children’s activities.
During the city’s 2007 fiscal year that ended Sept. 30,
volunteers contributed 40,067 hours toward city programs and projects.
The financial benefit of city of Columbia volunteers is estimated at
$752,057.59, based on a national value of $18.77 per hour.
