Mayor Hindman proclaims ‘Earth Hour’

COLUMBIA, MO (March 17, 2008) - Mayor Darwin Hindman today declared
that “Earth Hour” will occur in Columbia from 8 - 9 p.m. on
Saturday, March 29. Citizens are invited to turn off artificial lighting
during that period, reducing the need for electric power generation and
its associated greenhouse gas emissions.

In his proclamation, Hindman challenges all United States cities and
concerned people around the world to do the same thing. The combined
effort, he says, will “raise awareness, educate and reduce our carbon
footprint as we darken our homes and buildings.”
Earth Hour is part of a global observance of Earth Hour Day. The event
comes one year after Sydney, Australia, demonstrated that it saved
25,000 tons of carbon emissions in one hour, simply by turning the
lights out in the city and surrounding countryside. Similar observances
are expected in other countries and individual cities.

Columbia City Council members authorized the proclamation at their
March 3, 2008 meeting. Mayor Hindman signed the Mayor’s Climate
Protection Agreement, along with almost 700 other American mayors, in
July 2006.

Citizens may view the proclamation on the city’s Web site at
www.GoColumbia.Mo.com.
