Firefighters respond to report of gas odor and explosion at Armory
Sports Complex

COLUMBIA, MO (March 17, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
11:29 a.m. on Monday, March 17, to 701 East Ash Street, the Armory
Sports Complex, for a report of a small explosion and strong odor of gas
in the basement.

Firefighters arrived and found the source of the odor was a sink drain
in the basement which had clogged. Employees attempting to clear the
drain inadvertently mixed two chemical drain cleaning compounds. The
chemical reaction caused the chemicals to erupt from the drain. Fire
officials determined the chemical compounds used were "Thrift" and
"Drain Pro Gel." There was no evidence of an explosion or fire and no
damage to the structure.

Firefighters and Ameren UE crews used combustible gas monitors to
verify there was no natural gas leak.

One city of Columbia Public Works-Building Maintenance employee
received minor burns when he came into contact with the chemicals as
they sprayed from the drain. He is currently receiving medical
treatment.

Firefighters remind residents to use household chemicals only as
directed and to read all directions carefully prior to use. Household
chemicals should not be mixed as dangerous chemical reactions may occur.
