Cleanup Columbia planned for April 12

COLUMBIA, MO (March 18, 2008) - The city of Columbia invites residents
to become collectors, at least for one day, by participating in Cleanup
Columbia. Cleanup Columbia, a city-wide trash pick up event and one of
Columbia’s largest single-day volunteer activities, will be held on
Saturday, April 12.

Volunteers will end the day by assembling their very own collection of
trash that will end up in the city landfill or a recycling bin, instead
of along roadsides or in parks. This year’s event, the 12th annual,
currently has nearly 80 registered groups and 1,050 volunteers planning
to participate. There is still plenty of time for others to volunteer.

Individuals and groups of all sizes and types are welcome to
participate in Cleanup Columbia. The city of Columbia will work with
each person or group to identify an area for trash pick up, provide
supplies including bags and gloves and pick up the filled bags at the
end of the event. Lunch is held for volunteers at noon at Twin Lakes
Recreation Area following trash pickup.

In addition to picking up litter along streets or parks, volunteers may
also choose to pick up litter in one of Columbia’s streams or remove
graffiti from public property in central Columbia.

Sponsors for Cleanup Columbia include APAC-Missouri Inc, the Sierra
Club, CenturyTel, Wal-Mart, Columbia Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, KOMU TV-8
and the Mid-Missouri CW. The Golden K Kiwanis Club and Columbia Public
Works Department provide important support for the event.

To learn more about Cleanup Columbia or to register, call the city’s
Office of Volunteer Services at 874-7499 or visit www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
The deadline to register is Friday, April 4.
