Columbia firefighter injured during intentionally-set fire

COLUMBIA, MO (May 17, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at 4:48
a.m. on Saturday, May 17, to 908 Madison Street for a report of a
structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found flames had already burned through the
roof of a vacant home. Due to the amount of fire progression, initial
arriving fire crews were forced into a "defensive" fire attack; meaning
the fire was fought from the exterior with large fire streams. During
the initial fire attack, Columbia Fire Department Lieutenant Tom Ogden
suffered second-degree burns to one hand and was transported to
University Hospital by ambulance and is currently undergoing treatment
at the George Peak Burn Unit. No other injuries were reported.

The home suffered severe fire damage and is a total loss. No cost
estimate is available at this time.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department are currently at the
scene and have determined the fire was intentionally set. Anyone with
information relating to this fire is asked to call Crime Stoppers at
573-875-TIPS (8477).

Twenty-two Columbia Fire Department personnel and six pieces of fire
apparatus were used to bring the fire under control.
