Firefighters respond to late afternoon fire
COLUMBIA, MO (November 2, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
5:10 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 2, to 504 Dustin Drive for a report of a
residential structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke
coming from the home and the attached garage. The occupants were at home
at the time of the fire. The homeowner had knocked down the fire before
fire units arrived using a garden hose.
The residents of the home were first notified of a fire when the
hallway smoke alarm in the residence sounded. After calling 9-1-1 and
then investigating, the residents found that there was a small fire in
the garage area.
Fire investigators concluded, based on evidence and the homeowner's
statements, that the fire began in the garage and the likely cause was a
malfunction of a battery charger. Damage to the structure and contents
is estimated at $5,000. Smoke alarms in the residence provided the first
notification to the residents that a fire was in progress.
Working smoke alarms save lives and property. Test your alarm monthly,
change the batteries annually and replace your smoke alarms every 10
years.
