Emergency Shelter Opens as Columbia Begins Receiving Gustav Evacuees
COLUMBIA, MO (September 1, 2008) - The City of Columbia has begun
receiving spontaneous evacuees from the gulf coast due to the effects of
Hurricane Gustav. As a result, an emergency shelter has been activated
at the Calvary Baptist Church, 606 Ridgeway Avenue.

Any person wishing to volunteer at the shelter should call 2-1-1 for
further instructions. Volunteers are asked not to report directly to
the emergency shelters. Please utilize the 2-1-1 system and follow the
reporting instructions, determined by the number and needs of the
evacuees and supporting agencies.

The Columbia Fire Department’s Community Emergency Response Team and
the Red Cross have activated their volunteers and are currently staffing
the shelter.
