Public art proposal on view

COLUMBIA, MO (September 29, 2008) - Artist Jane Mudd’s proposal for
artwork for Columbia’s new Fire Station No. 7 is available for viewing
on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/Arts.

The city’s Standing Committee on Public Art selected Mudd to create
site-specific public art for the fire station through the Percent for
Art program. Her proposal details a bronze relief sculpture that will be
mounted on a masonry wall in front of the new station at the
intersection of Green Meadows and Green Meadows Circle. An informal
seating area will accompany the wall. Mudd is using “In Gratitude”
as a working title for the proposal which focuses on the themes of
thankfulness and community.

Public comment on the proposal is invited. An electronic comment box is
available on the Web site; comments will be accepted through Oct. 9.
Comments may also be submitted by emailing oca at GoColumbiaMo.com, by mail
to the Office of Cultural Affairs, P.O. Box 6015, Columbia, MO 65205 or
by fax to (573) 874-7681.

After the public comment period, the city’s Standing Committee on
Public Art will meet to review Mudd’s proposal. The committee will
formulate a recommendation that will then be forwarded to the Commission
on Cultural Affairs. Final approval of the design concept will be
determined by City Council.

The fire station public art project is part of Percent for Art, a
program established by City Council in May 1997. It allows for one
percent of costs of eligible city new and renovation construction
projects be set aside for site-specific artwork.

Percent for Art is coordinated by the city’s Office of Cultural
Affairs. For more information, call (573) 874-7512 or e-mail
oca at GoColumbiaMo.com.
