Extrication accident traps car under bus

COLUMBIA, MO (April 2, 2009) - Columbia firefighters were called at
5:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, to the intersection of Old Highway 63
South and Bearfield Road for a report of an extrication accident.

Firefighters arrived to find a silver Infiniti i30 passenger car, which
had been struck by a city of Columbia transit bus. The bus had come to
rest on top of the car. Fire crews discovered the driver of the car was
injured and still trapped inside the wreckage. At 5:55 p.m., a second
heavy rescue squad from the Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to
bring additional equipment and personnel to the scene and assist with
rescue efforts. Two large wreckers were also dispatched from Carl's
Towing to assist with lifting the bus off of the car, allowing access to
the injured victim. It took rescue crews approximately 45 minutes to
free the driver, who was transported to University Hospital by ambulance
with critical injuries.

There were 14 passengers on the bus at the time of the accident; none
were injured.

Any media inquiries relating to the accident investigation, or the
release of victim's names, should be directed to the Columbia Police
Department.
