Mayor: Coach Mike and Marcheita Anderson will chair Bike, Walk and
Wheel Week

COLUMBIA, MO (April 7, 2009) - Mayor Darwin Hindman today announced
that University of Missouri men’s basketball head coach Mike Anderson
and his wife Marcheita will serve as honorary chairs of the eighth
annual Mayor's Challenge: Bike, Walk and Wheel Week, scheduled for May
2-8.

“We are thrilled to have the ‘first family’ of Mizzou basketball
volunteering their time and effort for this event,” Hindman said.
“The Andersons are excellent role models in this community. Since
coming to Columbia, they’ve set an example for family life, for the
value of physical activity and exercise and for teaching young people
the worth of working as a team.”

"Marcheita and I are proud to serve as the honorary chairs for Mayor
Hindman's Bike, Walk and Wheel Week," coach Mike Anderson said. "This is
a great event, one that promotes healthier, active living and helps
create community awareness. We are certainly looking forward to a very
fun week."

The participation goal for this year's challenge is 5,000 residents,
and those interested can sign up at the kick-off event on Saturday or
may go online to sign up at
http://pednet.org/programs/bwww-register.asp.

The weeklong promotion begins May 2 at 1 p.m. with a kick-off event at
Flat Branch Park. It encourages everyone to use more active modes of
transportation such as walking and biking to get to work, school and
other destinations.

The event continues on May 3 with the popular Cycle Recycle. Volunteers
have been working to repair donated bikes and will pair registered
participants with a free, refurbished bicycle. The Cycle Recycle runs
from 1-3 p.m. at the GetAbout Columbia office, 101 N. 7th Street.

Everyone rides city buses for free May 7 on Try Transit Thursday. In
addition, anyone with a bike can ride the city bus for free all week
long.

The event concludes with Breakfast Station Day on May 8. Registered
participants can enjoy a free breakfast as they bike, walk or wheel
about town.
