Volunteers turn out in big numbers to Cleanup Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (April 25, 2009) - The beautiful spring weather was a
great reason for nearly 1,700 Columbia residents to get outside and
volunteer today with Cleanup Columbia, a city-wide trash pickup event.
The Office of Volunteer Services estimates that 1,695 volunteers picked
up a total of 2,233 bags of litter and logged more than 3,100 hours of
service. These preliminary numbers are based on reports from 62 groups
that provided data on their cleanups. More than 570 volunteers attended
the post-cleanup luncheon at Twin Lakes.
Cleanup Columbia is a city-wide trash pick up event that is organized
by the city of Columbia’s Office of Volunteer Services. During Cleanup
Columbia, volunteers picked up litter along streets, in parks and along
streams and trails and removed graffiti from public property in central
Columbia.
Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri Division, the Sierra
Club, CenturyTel, Walmart, the Columbia Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, the
Mid-Missouri CW and KOMU TV 8. Columbia Public Works and the Golden K
Kiwanis Club provide special assistance for the event.
Additional updates on the work accomplished by Cleanup Columbia
volunteers will be posted on the Office of Volunteer Services’ page of
the city's Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com (
http://www.gocolumbiamo.com/ ).
