Disaster Can Strike Any Time: Be Prepared with Tips from the Office of
Emergency Management
COLUMBIA, MO (August 17, 2009) - Disaster can come in many forms.
Whether it’s a house fire, tornado, or terrorist attack, the impact
can be devastating on those affected. The Columbia/Boone County Office
of Emergency Management (OEM) encourages everyone to be prepared for any
type of disaster.
“We certainly hope that a large-scale disaster never happens in our
area, but we must be realistic,” says Interim OEM Director Zim
Schwartze. “Chances are, we are likely to see some kind of disaster
strike in the future. While we can’t predict what that disaster will
be, we can be prepared. Preparation is extremely important before,
during, and after an event.”
One of the best ways for businesses, families, and individuals to
prepare for a disaster is to assemble a disaster kit, which can be
filled with several items which can be beneficial in the hours and days
after an event has occurred. In addition, a plan should be designed, to
establish shelter areas, escape routes, and methods of contacting
friends and family members after an event.
The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management has a number
of publications available, addressing disaster preparation. Copies of
such materials are available by contacting OEM at (573) 874-7400, or by
logging on the OEM website at www.gocolumbiamo.com/EM.
