Residents urged to make it a safe holiday
COLUMBIA, MO (December 21, 2009) - The staff and management from the
Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Public
Safety Joint Communications (PSJC) would like to wish residents a merry
Christmas and happy holiday season. We would also like to encourage
everyone to make sure this is a safe holiday.
“At this time of the year, with the hustle and bustle of the holiday,
sometimes safety may be at the back of our minds,” says OEM and PSJC
Director Zim Schwartze. “However, we want to make sure that everyone
takes the proper steps in their home and vehicle to avoid a Christmas
tragedy.”
With the possibility of significant snowfall this week, Schwartze
reminds those making a holiday road trip to make sure their vehicle is
ready. Motorists should check their ignition system, fuel, battery,
lights, tires, heater, brakes, wipers, defroster, oil and exhaust.
Drivers should also keep their fuel tank full to avoid a moisture
buildup.
Motorists should keep a winter storm kit in the car. Kits should
contain items such as a flashlight, windshield scraper, clothes, matches
or candles, booster cables, sand, chains, blankets and non-perishable
food. If wintry weather surpasses your driving ability, do not venture
onto the road.
If you’re staying at home for Christmas, preparation is also
important. Make sure you know what the weather holds by keeping updated
with local media and by listening to NOAA Weather Radio. Double-check
battery-powered equipment in case electric service is interrupted. Make
sure you have an ample supply of non-perishable food and water, as well
as a dependable heating source. Make sure pets and animals have shelter
and an adequate water supply.
Most importantly, in the event of a life-threatening emergency, do not
hesitate to call 911 for assistance.
