Make preparedness a New Year’s resolution; residents urged to have a
disaster plan
COLUMBIA, MO (December 29, 2009) - As Columbia and Boone County
prepares to usher in 2010, the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and
Public Safety Joint Communications (PSJC) encourage everyone to have a
disaster plan in 2010.
“No one knows what the new year will bring, but it’s always best to
be ready for disaster,” said OEM and PSJC Director Zim Schwartze.
Whether natural or man-made, a disaster cannot be predicted or
prevented. However, our response to a disaster can make all the
difference when it comes to the safety of you and your family.
Schwartze says the key is preparing for that response. “From
developing an escape plan in the event of a house fire, to knowing what
to do during severe weather, to having an emergency supply kit for your
home and vehicle, preparation is critical for any kind of disaster.
While we hope that we go through 2010 without any disasters, we know
it’s always better to be safe than sorry.”
The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management has a number
of informational brochures on disaster preparedness for individuals,
families, schools, businesses or groups. To inquire about the materials,
contact the Office of Emergency Management at (573) 874-7400. The same
resources can be found on the OEM page of the citys' Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com/EM.
