FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Battalion Chief Gary L. Warren Jr. - (573) 499-7035
School bus involved in three-car pileup in northeast Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (January 30, 2009) - Around 3:20 p.m. units of the
Columbia Fire Department responded to the intersection of Brown Station
Road and Sherwood Drive for an injury accident involving two passenger
vehicles and a school bus.
The school bus (bus #10) was transporting students from Lange Middle
School and Oakland Junior High. The bus, while stopped on Brown Station
at Sherwood, was preparing to let students off at the corner when a
Silver Toyota Sienna driven by Jessica Shirley ran into the back of the
bus. The Sienna was then hit by a Grey Buick Lesabre driven by Callista
Grace.
Of the approximate 30-35 students on the bus, no major injuries were
reported. Several of the students were seen at the scene by EMS and Fire
Department personnel before leaving with parents or guardians. The
driver of the Toyota Sienna (Jessica Shirley) did report having an
injury to her left arm and had a visible head contusion, but refused
transport by EMS personnel and instead opted to go by POV (privately
owned vehicle) to a local hospital. There were two child passengers in
the Toyota (a boy and a girl), who reported no injuries and left the
scene with a parent or guardian. The driver of the third vehicle
reported no injuries and refused treatment at the scene.
Firefighters used oil away (an absorbent product) to clean up fluid
spills from the vehicles involved before turning the scene over to the
Columbia Police Department for an accident investigation. The Toyota
Sienna had to be towed from the scene by a wrecker.
