Columbia Fire Department Fire Station No. 7 Grand Opening

COLUMBIA, MO (February 2, 2009) - The Columbia Fire Department invites
everyone to the grand opening of Columbia Fire Department Station No. 7,
located at 400 Green Meadows Circle, corner of Green Meadows and Green
Meadows Circle, on Sunday Feb. 8 from 2-4 p.m.

Beginning at 2 p.m., Fire Chief William Markgraf will introduce city
officials including Mayor Darwin Hindman, 5th Ward Councilwoman Laura
Nauser and City Manager Bill Watkins, along with the architect, Erik
Miller of Peckham & Wright, who will make brief presentations to
commemorate the station opening. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce
ambassadors will officially cut the ribbon to open the station and Quint
7 will officially be “housed”. There will be refreshments served
during the event.

Attendees are asked to park in the parking lot of the Rockbridge
Christian Church just north and east of the new fire station which can
be accessed off of Green Meadows Circle. A shuttle will run during the
event between the parking lot and the new fire station.

Mid-Missouri artist Jane Mudd was selected by the City
Council-appointed Standing Committee on Public Art for the project and
has submitted a design for site-specific public art at the new station.
The design consists of a bronze relief sculpture with the working title
"In Gratitude," intended to convey the thankfulness of a community for
the safety and service that firefighters provide. Mudd is now
fabricating her work which will include casting the bronze component.
Installation will likely occur sometime this spring.

After purchasing a 1.5-acre tract of land at the corner of Green
Meadows Road and Green Meadows Circle for $287,647 for the fire station,
in response to neighborhood desires, the tract of land just north of the
building site was purchased for an additional $110,585 and will be
graded, planted and maintained as open green space. Sidewalks along the
northern property boundaries will be added in the near future.

GBH Builders Inc., from Jefferson City, Mo., was awarded the $1,766,678
bid as the general contractor. Mechanical engineering is provided by CM
Engineering in Columbia, structural engineering by Trabue, Hansen &
Hinshaw of Columbia and civil engineering by Engineering Surveys and
Services of Columbia.

Quint Number 7, a 2003 Sutphen custom cab with a 75-foot aerial, along
with Bus 76 and other fire/rescue and emergency medical service related
equipment will be available for viewing by the public. Tours of the
facility will be given by firefighters assigned to Station No. 7 during
the event.

The 7,900 square foot building was designed and is expected to qualify
as a LEED-certified project.
