Columbia Fire Department reminds animal owners to keep animals off
ice-covered ponds and lakes
COLUMBIA, MO (February 2, 2009) - Over the weekend, the Columbia Fire
Department responded to four animal rescue calls for dogs that were
allowed to venture onto ice-covered bodies of water and broken through.
During one of the three animal rescue calls on Saturday, Jan. 31, two
people attempted to rescue the dog by going onto the ice at which point
one of the two adults broke completely through becoming submerged in the
frigid water. Luckily, the dog was retrieved and no injuries were
reported.
As a reminder, the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department has posted
signs at the Garth Avenue and Twin Lakes leash-free areas urging animal
owners not to let their animals wander onto the ice. Owners are
encouraged to keep their animals on leashes when ice exists or under
strict voice control in these areas and any areas where animals can
wander onto ice-covered bodies of water.
Should an animal wander onto the ice and break through, follow these
instructions -
Do not attempt to rescue the animal.
Call 9-1-1 from the nearest phone.
Report your exact location to 9-1-1.
Await the arrival of trained and properly equipped rescuers from
emergency services.
Shout encouragement to the animal.
