Columbia fire truck responding to emergency call struck by private
vehicle
COLUMBIA, MO (February 5, 2009) - Columbia firefighters were dispatched
to a residential structure fire at 7:20 a.m. at 310 S Garth Ave. While
responding to that fire, Snozzel 1, housed at Station1 at 10th and Ash,
was southbound on Providence with emergency lights and sirens activated,
when it was struck by a private vehicle in the intersection of
Providence and Walnut.
The private vehicle suffered major damage. The fire apparatus suffered
moderate damage. The fire apparatus is currently out of service and a
reserve apparatus was placed in front live service.
The driver of the private vehicle was evaluated on the scene by
firefighter/EMT and by paramedics from University Health Care and he
refused treatment or transport. No firefighters reported any injuries.
All Columbia Fire Department personnel have received the following
training -
Highway Safety for Emergency Service Personnel
This is a course that involves responding to injury accidents on any
type of roadway. It includes an interactive training program which
allows personnel to "set up" how an emergency scene should be staged or
protected at an injury accident.
Emergency Vehicle Driver Training Program
This course encompasses all phases of apparatus driving. It examines
driving in all conditions on all roadways for emergency and
non-emergency operation of apparatus. All participants received
certification for completion of this program with Captain Hartman's
signature as a T-the-T for this course. Copies of the certifications
should be in personnel files.
The Columbia Police Department is investigating the crash and all
questions concerning cause, names of drivers, and related information
should be obtained from CPD.
