Two Columbia structures damaged by overnight fires
COLUMBIA, MO (January 20, 2009) - Two Columbia structures were damaged
in separate overnight fires 29 minutes apart. The first fire was
reported at 2:36 a.m. at 216 South Fifth Street. Fire crews discovered a
bedroom fire which had already been extinguished. There were no injuries
and damage to the home is estimated at $1,000.
The occupant, Megan Jacob, indicated that she was awakened by the heat
of the fire and immediately discovered flames on her bed and curtains.
Smoke alarms were present in the home and were sounding when fire crews
arrived. The cause of the fire was determined to be a burning candle
coming into contact with the curtains.
The second fire, reported at 3:05 a.m. at 4200 Rock Quarry Road,
destroyed a shed behind a home. Fire crews discovered a shed fully
engulfed in flames and quickly extinguished the fire. Investigators from
the Columbia Fire Department are currently working at the scene and at
this time, the cause remains under investigation.
