City manager narrows field of police chief candidates

COLUMBIA, MO (January 30, 2009) - City Manager Bill Watkins will
continue discussing the position of city police chief with two
finalists: Police Chief Kenneth M. Burton and Police Major Christine L.
Laughlin. Watkins made his decision after meeting with a citizens
advisory committee today.

Watkins said that Burton and Laughlin stand out in a very
well-qualified field of four candidates. “All of them brought
excellent qualities and experience to the table, but Chief Burton and
Major Laughlin deserve further consideration.”

Their experience in larger communities is important. Chief Burton
served in Arlington, Texas, before his more recent tenure in other Texas
communities, and Major Laughlin has served in several capacities with
the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department since 1991.

“In addition,” Watkins said, when they were here two weeks ago
these individuals interacted particularly well with citizens and police
officers. I think they could contribute significantly to this
community.”

Watkins said he will invite both candidates to visit Columbia again in
the near future. “I would like to make a decision as soon as possible
but will take all the time necessary to make absolutely sure we get a
good fit.”
