School water system upgrades underway

(COLUMBIA, MO) -- Columbia Water & Light started upgrading water
mains to the city’s older schools this summer. Many of Columbia's
schools were built before commercial water main standards were required.
Replacing these water mains will bring the schools’ water service up
to current standards which will provide more water for fire fighting
purposes. The new water lines will also increase the reliability of
water service.
The water main replacements are being funded by a bond issue
approved by voters in November 2008. The funding appropriated for
upgrading the water mains to six schools is $1,614,500. The new water
mains are in place for the Ridgeway and New Haven projects. Water crews
estimate that the West Junior High project is 75 percent complete. The
West Boulevard Elementary and Eugene Field Elementary school projects
were recently started. The goal is to complete the majority of the
school projects before the students return to the classrooms this fall.
