Boards and commissions applications are available 
									
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
Aug. 7. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings:  
●	The Bicycle and Pedestrian Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire July 31, 2012. The member must have knowledge of street
construction and maintenance and must be a qualified voter of the city.
The board advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks, walkways
and trails. Monthly meetings are held the third Wednesday at 7 p.m.
●	The Board of Electrical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire Aug. 1, 2012. The member must be a layperson. The board is
empowered to give examinations for electricians' licenses and
certificates. Monthly meetings, when necessary, are held on the third
Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
●	The Board of Health has two vacancies with terms to expire Aug.
31, 2012.  One member must be a physician and one must have an interest
in public health. The board acts in an advisory capacity to the Council
on matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly
meetings are held the second Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
●	The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.  
●	The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member) with
terms expiring Aug. 1, 2010, for the following categories: professional
engineer with experience in electrical/mechanical engineering and a
master plumber. The commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
●	The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Nov. 1, 2011. The member must be a resident from Ward 5
and a qualified voter of the city. Members shall not serve on the board
of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding
through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of
the commission. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all
matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held
on call.
●	The Community Services Advisory Commission has one vacancy with
the term to expire Dec. 31, 2011. The member must be a qualified voter
and resident of the city of Columbia and shall not serve on the board of
directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through
the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the
commission. (Each academic and administrative unit of the University of
Missouri shall be considered a separate agency and each school of the
Columbia Public School District shall be considered a separate agency.)
The commission advises the city and county in all matters regarding the
planning and contracting for human service programs to adequately meet
the needs of the citizens. Monthly meetings are held the third Tuesday
at 7 p.m.
●	The Cultural Affairs Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire Oct. 31, 2010. The member must be involved in elementary or
secondary education and shall not serve on the board of directors or be
employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission
or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The
commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and
cultural environment of the city. Monthly meetings are held the second
Monday at 4:15 p.m.
●	The Historic Preservation Commission has two vacancies with
terms to expire Sept. 1, 2012. Members must have an interest in historic
preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design,
law, real estate appraisal, construction/general contracting or be a
layperson. The commission makes recommendations to the Council regarding
historically significant structures.  Monthly meetings are held the
first Tuesday at 7 p.m. 
●	The Public Communications Resource Advisory Committee has one
vacancy with the term to expire Dec. 31, 2010. The member must be a
qualified voter and resident of Ward 1 and shall be experienced in the
field of communications, citizenship or management of not-for-profit
organizations, and shall not be paid officers or employees of the city,
nor serve on the board of directors or be employed by any entity that
applies for funding through the committee or which receives funding upon
recommendation of the committee. The committee advises the City Council
in allocating designated revenue to entities that provide public
communication services to Columbia citizens. Meetings are held the
fourth Thursday of the month at 4 p.m. 
●	The Railroad Advisory Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire July 15, 2010. The member must have knowledge and interest in
either railroad, shipping, transportation or business and be sympathetic
with the principle of municipal ownership and operation of branch line
rail operations. The board advises the Council on the operations and
needs of the Columbia Terminal railroad. Monthly meetings are held the
second Thursday at 7:30 a.m.
●	The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Oct. 31, 2011. The member must have demonstrated interest
in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the community
and must be a healthcare professional. The commission promotes
coordination of programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and
substance abuse. Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12
p.m.  
●	The Tax Increment Financing Commission has one vacancy to be
appointed by the mayor (with consent of the City Council) with the term
to expire Sept. 1, 2011. The commission serves as an advisory body to
the City Council as it relates to the consideration of tax increment
financing proposals submitted by interested parties or initiated by any
public agency in accordance with the Real Property Tax Increment
Allocation Redevelopment Act. Meetings are held on call. All applicants
will be considered. Also, non-applicants will be considered.
