Severe weather possible for Boone County; severe thunderstorm watch
until 8 p.m.
COLUMBIA, MO (June 2, 2009) - The threat of severe weather has prompted
the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a severe thunderstorm watch
for several Missouri counties, including Boone County. While severe
weather may not be immediately upon us, now is the time to make
preparations.
Interim Columbia/Boone County Emergency Management Director Zim
Schwartze: “The National Weather Service believes that Columbia and
Boone County could see some strong to severe thunderstorms between now
and this evening. We recommend that everyone take time now to review
their emergency plans.”
A severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for the
development of severe thunderstorms in the area. Those storms could
include large hail, heavy rains and damaging winds. Once threatening
weather approaches Columbia and Boone County, the Emergency Operations
Center will activate its network of trained storm spotters to report the
nature, path and severity of the storms. Reports from those spotters
provide essential advance notice, so residents can take shelter when
needed.
