Earth Hour lowers electric load

(Columbia, MO) -- Columbia Water & Light staff is estimating that
Columbia’s participation in Earth Hour on Saturday, March 28, from
8:30 to 9:30 p.m. resulted in a 1.27 megawatt drop in the electric load.
The electric load for the hour was 161 megawatt hours. Electric
consumption for the hour was evaluated on a 15-second interval and
compared to the previous week’s electric load. The 1.27 megawatts of
electricity is equivalent to the amount of power used by 50 homes in
Columbia for one average day.

Columbia Climate Change Coalition encouraged citizens to participate in
Earth Hour. Citizens were asked to voluntarily turn off lights during
the hour to increase awareness about saving energy and avoiding green
house gas emissions. Earth Hour is part of a global observance of Earth
Hour Day.

For the 2008 Earth Hour, Columbia Water and Light estimated the
electric load was 144 megawatt hours and the savings was 1.72 megawatts.
This is equivalent to the amount of power used by 70 homes in Columbia
for one day.
