Risk of strong thunderstorms through tonight; keep plan of action in
mind, in the event of severe weather
COLUMBIA, MO (May 7, 2009) - Although the chances are slight, the
National Weather Service (NWS) reports the possibility of strong
thunderstorms affecting Mid-Missouri, including Columbia and Boone
County, late this afternoon and tonight. Storms which move through the
area could bring potential for damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles per
hour, large hail, locally heavy rainfall and isolated tornadoes. With
that probability, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency
Management (OEM) advises residents to keep updated on the latest weather
information through the day.
“This is a good time for everyone to review their plan of action in
the event of severe weather,” said OEM Director James McNabb.
“Businesses, schools and families are encouraged to take just a few
minutes to make sure everyone knows what to do if severe weather
strikes. A few minutes of preparation can ultimately prevent serious
injury or death.”
McNabb also encourages residents to tune to local media, and have an
NOAA weather radio nearby. By keeping updated on weather information,
you can be ready before the storm approaches.
In the event of severe weather, the Office of Emergency Management
implements a Storm Spotter Activation System, in which trained spotters
will be sent to areas where storms are having an impact. The work of
those trained spotters can give critical advance warning when storms
threaten Columbia and Boone County.
