More than 2,000 volunteers are scheduled to ‘Cleanup Columbia’ Saturday

(COLUMBIA, MO) – The city of Columbia’s Volunteer Programs reports that
2,018 volunteers representing 210 groups have registered to participate
in this Saturday’s Cleanup Columbia event, making it one of the largest
in the event’s 14-year history.
Volunteers will be along Columbia streets and trails, in streams and
parks Saturday morning picking up litter. Following trash pickup,
volunteers are invited to a picnic lunch at noon at Twin Lakes
Recreation Area to celebrate their efforts.
“There are still several streets that have not been assigned for
Saturday,” said Leigh Britt, manager of the city’s Office of
Neighborhood Services that coordinates the event. “Volunteers are still
welcome to participate.”
Those who have not yet registered can be assigned a cleanup location
and pick up supplies Wednesday from 3-6 p.m., Thursday from 3-6 p.m.,
Friday from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. or Saturday from 7:30-9 a.m. at 3601 S.
Providence Road at the Office of Neighborhood Services. The office is
housed in the old Fire Station 7 on the west outer road of Providence,
north of Nifong.
Former Councilwoman Almeta Crayton invites those interested in cleaning
the central city to meet her at 409 Oak Street starting at 9 a.m.
Saturday morning.
The public is encouraged to use caution while driving in Columbia on
Saturday morning as volunteers may be working near roadways.
Cleanup Columbia is sponsored by APAC-Missouri Division, the Sierra
Club, CenturyLink, the Columbia Daily Tribune, 102.3 BXR, the
Mid-Missouri CW and KOMU TV 8. Columbia Public Works, Firestone Tires
and the Golden K Kiwanis Club provide special assistance for the event.
