“Promoting Positive Mental Health from Birth to Adulthood”
On Tuesday, May 4th, Columbia Mayor Robert McDavid will proclaim May
2nd through May 8th as Children’s Mental Health Week in Columbia. The
proclamation event will take place at the Columbia/Boone County
Department of Public Health and Human Services(1005 West Worley in
Columbia) at 9:00 am and is hosted by the Columbia/Boone County
Department of Public Health and Human Services and National Alliance on
Mental Illness (NAMI) of Columbia. Mayor McDavid will be joined by Steve
Hollis, Manager of Human Services for the City of Columbia and Tim
Harlan, President of NAMI of Columbia.
Children’s Mental Health Weekis a nationwide event promoted by NAMI,
Mental Health America and the Federation of Families to bring attention
to the mental health needs of children and adolescents. This year’s
theme is “Promoting Positive Mental Health from Birth to Adulthood” and
emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment.
Childhood onset mental health disorders are common. One in ten children
has a mental health condition that causes significant impairment, yet
very few receive the help they need. Moreover, suicide is the
third-leading cause of death for America’s youth ages 15-24.
