Early Morning Fire in Tryps Children's Theater at Columbia Mall

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:49a.m. on Sunday August 22, 2010 to 2300 Bernadette Dr, the Columbia Mall, for a report of a fire alarm.

Crews arrived on the scene to find light smoke in the mall and began investigating for the source. While exiting the roof after checking the HVAC systems crews noticed water coming from the door to Tryps Children's Theater. Security was unable to gain access to Tryps so Fire crews forced entry and found considerable smoke and the sprinkler system functioning. The incident was then upgraded to a commercial structure fire and crews continued to search for the fire.  The fire was located in a storage area behind the stage in Tryps. The automatic sprinkler system had controlled the fire so crews were able to complete extinguishment with a fire extinguisher. 

Large fans were used to remove the smoke from the affected areas of the mall. Water vacuum's and the mall floor machines were also employed to remove the water from the sprinkler system. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Damages have been estimated at $ 2,500.00 and there were no injuries associated with the fire.
