UPDATE--Cause Determined for Rogers Street Home Fire
Columbia Fire Department Investigators have determined this morning's home fire at 504 Rogers Street was accidental. After examining evidence found at the scene, and interviewing witnesses and occupants, the cause was determined to be a seven-year-old juvenile attempting to cook popcorn in a microwave oven.
No one was injured during the 10:30 a.m. fire, which caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the home.
At 7:10 a.m., fire and EMS units were dispatched to this same home for a medical emergency.
A female, the home's primary resident and mother of the juvenile, was transported to University Hospital by ambulance for treatment and was still in the hospital at the time of the fire. An 18 year old sibling was in the home with the juvenile at the time of the fire.
The Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing disaster assistance to the family.
