Fire Damages Building at Fireside Apartment Complex

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:08 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2010 to 101 East Green Meadows Road, Fireside Apartments, Apartment 32 for a report of a structure fire.

Fire crews arrived and found smoke and flames coming from a window on a ground level apartment.  Upon entry, crews discovered a fire in a first floor bedroom, which was brought under control in approximately 10 minutes.  The apartment sustained significant fire damage to one bedroom, with smoke, heat, and water damage throughout while the other three apartments in the building suffered smoke damage.  There were no injuries and damage is currently estimated at $7,500.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and at this time, the cause is under investigation.

The occupant, India Williams, indicated to fire crews that she was inside the apartment when she heard a "pop and crackles", a short time later, the smoke alarm sounded.  Upon investigation of the smoke alarm, she found a fire in the back bedroom.  She left the apartment and called 9-1-1 to request fire department assistance.

One occupant of the building is receiving emergency assistance from the Columbia-Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
