Columbians Invited to Start New Year Right at “Happy New U” Event

(Columbia, MO) — The Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health is
hosting Columbia’s third annual “Happy New U” fitness event. Held at
Columbia’s Activity and Recreation Center (ARC) on Ash Street from 9:00
am – 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 1, 2011 with registration beginning
at 8:45, this free community event will feature Columbia’s fitness
experts conducting mini-workouts and demonstrations to show the variety
of exercise options that are available in our city.

“Our goal with this event,” says Patricia Hansen, a co- chairperson for
the event, “is to help Columbians get a jump start on New Year’s
resolutions, get moving and to stay moving longer by connecting them
with local fitness options and professionals that will be the best match
for them.”

Classes or demonstrations offered at the event for adults will include
Tai Chi, pilates, yoga, jazzercise, Zumba, body combat, fencing,
gymnastics, spinning, and more. Children will be able to participate in
many of the fitness activities. Participants should come dressed “ready
to move!’

The activities will be held from 9:10 am to 9:55 am and 11:10 am to
12:00 noon with registration beginning at 8:45. In between, the
highlight of the “Happy New U” event will be one for the City’s record
books! Promising lots of sweat, laughter, holiday calories burned and
photo opportunities, Columbians attending will participate in
“Columbia’s Biggest Workout” at 10:00 am beginning with a few
words from former Mayor Darwin Hindman. The one hour event will
introduce everyone to 6 different exercise routines. Last year, over
250 Columbians participated in this event.

Fitness experts from the ARC, Columbia Jazzercise Center, Elm Street
Yoga, Wilson’s Gym, Pilates of Columbia, Key Largo Fitness, Flipz
Gymnastics and others will be conducting classes and demonstrations;
professional dieticians from Hy-Vee will be on hand to discuss healthy
eating tips. All activities are FREE, but please consider bringing a
can or two of healthy food for the Food Bank, which will be collecting
donations.
Mayor Robert McDavid adds, “Let’s make this the year to focus on health
and fitness.” This is the place to learn about how to get started in
the new year. For more information, visit www.gocolumbiamo.com and
