Businesses learn energy efficient operations
(Columbia, MO) - The cost of lighting can be a large percentage
of an energy budget for a business. Cutting down on these costs can help
businesses protect their profits. This Friday, participants of the
Building Operators Certification program will learn how to apply
efficient lighting techniques to their business. This is one of the
seven topics being covered in the program.
The Building Operator Certification program includes nearly 80
hours of classroom and project work in energy efficient building
systems’ operation and maintenance. Participants receive short tests
at the end of each session and a couple of take-home project assignments
dispersed throughout the program. Classes started in November with a day
in the classroom each month through May.
The Energy Center of the Missouri Department of Natural
Resources, in cooperation with the Midwest Energy Efficiency Alliance,
provides this training in Columbia with the support of Columbia Water &
Light and Ameren UE. A substantial discount on tuition is available to
Columbia electric customers. Columbia Water & Light supports this
program to help customers reduce their energy usage. Energy efficiency
saves the utility and the community on future power supply costs.
Topics covered in the level I training include:
● Energy-efficient building maintenance practices
● Indoor air quality
● Electrical, heating and cooling systems and lighting systems
● Preventive maintenance
● Operation and maintenance practices for sustainable buildings
The Building Operators Certification class will be held this
Friday, Feb. 5, at the Walton Building Community Room, 300 S. Providence
Road, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Frank Cunningham, commercial services
supervisor for Columbia Water & Light, will be in attendance.
