ColumbiaResident Burned in Early Morning Home Fire
Update on Monday, February 08, 2010
Columbiafire fighters responded to a report of a house fire at 1001
Westportat 12:49 amon Sunday, February 7, 2010. Fire fighters
arrived to find heavy smoke and fire venting from the windows on the
main floor on the north side of the home.
The home owner and only resident of the home, Barbara Chancellor, was
outside of the home when fire fighters arrived. Chancellor suffered burn
injuries to one or both arms and was transported to the
GeorgePeakMemorialBurn Centerat
UniversityHospitalfor treatment.
Fire fighters encountered significant fire on the main floor of the
single family home and brought the fire under control in less then 20
minutes.
In addition to the resident, one cat and one dog were also in the home.
Fire fighters located the cat which is now under the care of a neighbor.
As of this release, the dog has not been located and likely perished in
the fire.
Fire investigators are still waiting to interview the home owner to
make a final determination on the origin and cause of the fire. Due to
the homeowner’s hospitalization, we understand it could be several days
before an interview may take place. Fire investigators believe that
smoking was a contributing factor in the cause of the fire. The
operation smoke detectors are unknown. Damage estimates to contents and
the home are still estimated to be in the range of $75,000.00.
