Calling all weather spotters: OEM & National Weather Service host
weather spotter training session

COLUMBIA, MO (February 9, 2010) - While the recent winter weather may
not be an indicator, spring is just around the corner. Along with spring
weather comes the possibility of severe thunderstorms, flooding,
tornadoes and the need for trained people to help in the early warning
process. The Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM)
and the National Weather Service (NWS) will host a weather spotter
training class in Columbia on Feb. 22, 6:30-8:30 p.m, at the Columbia
Police Department Training Facility. The class is free and open to
everyone.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a firefighter, law enforcement
officer, first responder or a member of the general public interested in
severe weather spotting,” says OEM Director Zim Schwartze. “People
from all professions and all walks of life are welcome to take part in
the training. Weather spotters are the on-scene eyes and ears for our
office and the Weather Service in our efforts to warn the public about
approaching severe weather. This class can help everyone learn more
about how to observe storms and report those storms to the proper
channels.”

This class will also cover basic severe weather safety. The Columbia
Police Department Training Facility is located at 5001 Meyer Industrial
Drive. To RSVP, or for more information, contact the Columbia/Boone
County Office of Emergency Management at (573) 874-7400.
