First lady gives ‘shout out’ to mayor and Columbia, Mo.
COLUMBIA, MO (Date) - “That’s why Mayor Darwin Hindman of Columbia,
Missouri is building a system of walkways and bikeways in his city that
will connect business and shopping centers to schools, parks, and
neighborhoods.”
As she announced her upcoming initiative to fight childhood obesity
yesterday, first lady Michelle Obama praised mayors who already have
taken steps to promote physical activity and health. Columbia Mayor
Darwin Hindman, attending the U.S. Conference of Mayors winter meeting
in Washington, D.C., said he was proud to have Columbia get national
attention.
“Mrs. Obama spoke to several of us in a conference call last week and
then again yesterday morning before she made her national
announcement,” Hindman said. “We were all thrilled for our
cities.”
Other cities mentioned include Arlington, Texas; Bowling Green,
Kentucky; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and
Somerville, Massachusetts.
“I think we may be ahead of some other communities,” Hindman said.
“We’ve encouraged good health, physical activity and alternative
transportation for a long time, but there are lessons to learn and more
ideas to share.”
