City manager names sustainability manager
COLUMBIA, MO (January 22, 2010) - City Manager Bill Watkins today
announced the appointment of Barbara Buffaloe as the City of Columbia’s
first sustainability manager, effective in mid-February. Buffaloe will
be paid $55,000 annually and receive the standard city employee benefit
package.
City Council members approved the new position in the FY 2010 budget.
Buffaloe will administer a three-year U.S. Department of Energy Block
Grant aimed at continually reducing energy use and establishing
sustainable practices throughout the community. The grant will pay most
of the salary for this position.
City Manager Bill Watkins said that Buffaloe’s unique mix of education,
experience and community understanding made her stand out in very
qualified pool of candidates.
“Barbara is fully committed to making sustainability part of our
‘business-as-usual”, which is the right attitude. She is
future-oriented and focused on getting results, so I’m confident she can
meet our high expectations and those of the Department of Energy,”
Watkins said.
A Springfield, Illinois, native, Buffaloe is an instructor and housing
and environmental design associate with University of Missouri
Extension. She advised the University’s Solar Decathlon Team and
Emerging Green Builders group and is a member of Sustain Mizzou.
Buffaloe is a LEED Accredited Professional, a distinction recognized by
the United States Green Building Council. “LEED” stands for Leadership
and Environmental Design. She will be the city’s first employee with
this accreditation.
Buffaloe earned two degrees from the University of Missouri: a Bachelor
of Science degree in Environmental Design and a Masters in Science in
Environmental Behavior. She is a member of the United States Green
Building Council; Housing Educators Research Association; and
Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility. She will resign
from the city’s Environment and Energy Commission, which she now chairs.
