FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
FIRE IN BEDROOM DISPLACES RESIDENT

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 00:04 am on Friday, July 9, 2010 to 300 Allen Walkway for the report of a commercial structure fire.

Fire crews arrived on the scene and found smoke coming from the front of the unoccupied residence. Upon entering the structure crews found heavy smoke conditions and a fire in the master bedroom on the second floor. They then learned that the resident had been next door at a neighbors apartment when she was notified that there was smoke coming from her apartment.

Assistant Fire Marshal Stephen Potter spoke with the resident, 21yr old Feline Brown, and learned that after being notified about the smoke coming from her apartment she returned home and opened the front door where she heard the smoke detector sounding on the second floor and found her dog trying to get out of the structure.

A preliminary damage estimate of $30,000.00 has been issued by AFM Potter with the cause of the fire remaining under investigation. There were no injuries associated with this fire.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke alarm do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
