FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
FIRE IN GARAGE DAMAGES COLUMBIA HOME

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 11:17 pm on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 to 401 Stalcup St for the report of a residential structure fire.

Fire crews arrived on the scene and found a small fire in the garage of the residence which was quickly extinguished. They then learned that the homeowner had used two small dry chemical fire extinguishers on the fire prior to their arrival. Once the fire was extinguished crews tended to a small burn injury sustained by the homeowner while attempting to extinguish the fire.

Assistant Fire Marshal Stephen Potter spoke with the homeowner and learned that smoke was smelled in the residence and after investigating the cause of the odor a small fire was discovered in the garage. As the homeowner attempted to extinguish the fire his wife and three children evacuated the residence. The fire was contained in the garage area and very little smoke entered the living quarters so the smoke detectors were not activated.

A preliminary damage estimate of $5,000.00 has been issued by AFM Potter with the cause of the fire remaining under investigation. The only injury associated with this fire was a small burn that was received by the homeowner who went by private vehicle to be checked out at Boone Hospital.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that working smoke alarm do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
