Water main breaks lead to boil order for sections of Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (May 4, 2010) - Around 4:30 p.m. today, Columbia Water and
Light’s water main serving Thornbrook and Millcreek Manor subdivisions
broke. The break occurred near Scott Boulevard and Vawter School Road.
Another water main break also occurred on Blackfoot road this afternoon.
Due to the pressure in both of these water mains dropping, the utility
has issued a precautionary boil order.

Customers in the Thornbrook and Millcreek Manor subdivisions along with
customers on Blackfoot Road, Cedar Cliff Drive and Kraemer Court are
urged to take the following precautions:

Boil water for three minutes prior to using it for cooking or
drinking.

Do not use ice from an automatic ice maker. Remake ice with water that
has been boiled.

Disinfect dishes and food contact surfaces by immersing for one minute
in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented bleach per
gallon of water.

Water service in both the areas has been restored. The Missouri
Department of Natural Resources requires water suppliers to issue a
precautionary boil order when the pressure in a water main drops
significantly. The boil order in Columbia for these two areas will
continue until two clean water samples are obtained. It takes 24 hours
for each of the samples to be analyzed. The boil order could be in
effect until Friday, May 7. When the water tests verify that the water
is safe for drinking, the residents will be alerted that the boil order
has ended.
