Severe weather possible for Boone County; residents asked to prepare
for potential storm
COLUMBIA, MO (May 11, 2010) - The latest information from the National
Weather Service (NWS) indicates a threat for severe weather in
mid-Missouri, including Columbia and Boone County, over the next 24 to
48 hours. While no watches or warnings are currently in effect the
Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) advises
residents to make preparations in advance of the storm.
“This is a good time for everyone to review their plan of action in the
event of severe weather,” said OEM Director Zim Schwartze. “Businesses,
schools and families are encouraged to take just a few minutes to make
sure everyone knows what to do if severe weather strikes. A few minutes
of preparation can ultimately prevent serious injury or death.”
Schwartze also encourages residents to tune to local media and have a
NOAA weather radio nearby in order to keep updated on the latest weather
information. By keeping updated on weather information, you can be ready
before the storm approaches.
The National Weather Service reports that at least two rounds of strong
thunderstorms are possible. The first will arrive late tonight, bringing
the possibility of heavy rain and large hail. The second wave will
likely develop Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night, and be capable
of producing large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes.
