Potential exists for flooding

COLUMBIA, MO (May 19, 2010) - In the aftermath of heavy rain over the
past week, the National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting another
round of additional significant rainfall through Friday morning. The
potential for another 1-2 inches of rain has prompted the NWS to issue a
flash flood watch for several counties, including Boone, through Friday
afternoon.

“We want to make sure that the public is aware of the dangers the
additional rainfall could bring, especially at night,” says
Columbia/Boone County Emergency Management Director Zim Schwartze. “Most
flooding deaths occur at night, when it is more difficult to recognize
the dangers.”

Those with outdoor or travel plans are advised to stay updated with
local media on the latest weather information, and to have a NOAA
weather radio close at hand, to monitor possible watches and warnings.
Flooding could be a possibility at low-water crossings in Boone County.
Motorists are also reminded to steer clear of low-water crossings which
are covered in water. The Office of Emergency Management maintains an
updated list of road closures at the website
www.showmeboone.com/OEM/closures.
