Sprinkler Activation Causes Evacuation of Dobbs Pavilion Dining Hall

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 17:24 pm on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, to 600 Kentucky, Dobbs Pavilion, on the MU Campus for a reported fire alarm.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to found the dining hall evacuated and the fire alarm sounding because a sprinkler head had activated over the pasta cooker in the Dobbs Pavilion kitchen. The single sprinkler head ran for approximately 30 minutes while crews worked to locate the proper sprinkler control valves. Fire crews then assisted kitchen personal with removing the water and getting the floors dry. The dining hall has been shut down for clean up and campus EH&S (Environmental Health and Safety) was en-route to evaluate the kitchen area. Damage from the activation was estimated at $ 1,000.00.

Assistant Fire Marshal Davison indicated the kitchen had been experiencing some issues with the exhaust fan for the pasta cooker. The improper function of the exhaust fan and the elevated temperatures of the steam from the pasta cooker cause the sprinkler head to function. There was no fire associated with this activation, just high heat.
