Fire Damages Columbia Duplex

COLUMBIA, MO (August 6, 2011) - At approximately 8:45 p.m.on August 6th, 2011, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at1510 Native Dancer Court, in north-centralColumbia.

 

Fire crews arrived to find a duplex apartment with smoke coming from around the garage door of the east apartment.  Fire fighters found light smoke in the structure when they entered the apartment to search for occupants and attack the fire. The fire was contained to the garage and extinguished in less than fifteen minutes. There was no damage to the adjoining apartment.  Crews remained on the scene for approximately ninety minutes to overhaul the fire damage.

 

The apartment's occupant, Bonita Jennings, was resting in the living room when she smelled smoke and the smoke alarms began sounding.Jenningsand the other occupants evacuated the apartment and asked a neighbor to call9-1-1.

 

There were no injuries and damage is estimated at $12,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

 

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
