COLUMBIA, MO (August 16, 2011) - The Citizens Police Review Board will hold a public hearing and work session on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chamber in City Hall, 701 East Broadway, to hear public comment on possible changes to the review board ordinances. In his recent report to the City Council, the chief of police has requested changes to the review board ordinances. The Columbia Police Officers Association has also requested changes to the review board ordinances in its report to the City Council. At the mayor's request, the Citizens Police Review Board submitted a special report to the City Council. The board included its recommended changes in its report. All three reports, which discuss possible changes to the review board ordinances, are available on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com under the featured information section.

The possible changes include:

*Amending the ordinance to include a definition of misconduct.

*Further restrictions on who can appeal to the Citizens Police Review Board and further limitations on the time period for filing an appeal.

*Requiring the records and meetings regarding complaints to be closed.

*Placing limitations on the interview and investigative authority of the review board and whether hearings regarding specific complaints should be closed.

*Imposing additional training requirements for the review board members.

*Requiring police policies to be posted online.

*Requiring the police department to provide the board with monthly and annual reports on complaints.

The Citizens Police Review Board invites the public to comment at the meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 24. Comment may also be made in writing to the Citizens Police Review Board, P.O. Box 6015, Columbia, MO 65205 or via email to the Citizens Police Review Board on the city's website. Written and emailed comments received prior to Aug. 24 will be distributed to the board members. The board has invited the chief of police and representatives of the Columbia Police Officers Association to attend the public hearing and to participate in a work session regarding the proposed changes which will follow the public hearing.
