SMART911 Now Available in Boone County

COLUMBIA, MO (August 16, 2011) - The Public Safety Joint Communications Center (PSJC) has partnered with the Massachusetts-based Rave Mobile Safety to offer a free service to help residents of Columbia and Boone County communicate more effectively with 9-1-1 telecommunicators during an emergency.  The service is called "Smart911".

"Simply put, Smart911 can shorten response time in a critical situation," says PSJC Director Zim Schwartze.  "Smart911 can make information about you and your family readily available to emergency responders at a time when seconds count."

PSJC Systems Support Analyst Brian Maydwell explains how the system works:  "Residents can log on at a secure website and register information that they want to make available to 9-1-1 telecommunicators during an emergency.  That information can include medical conditions, the home addresses of mobile phone callers, and disabilities or other rescue-related information.  Whenever a Smart911-registered phone calls the 9-1-1 Operations Center, the entered information is automatically made available to the telecommunicator. The service is not only ideal for residents of Columbia and Boone County, but for the thousands of college students in the community who can make information available that first responders might not have quick and easy access to details such as allergies or preexisting medical conditions."

Schwartze and Maydwell stress that the information entered is kept completely private and secure and only viewable by emergency personnel when the registered user calls 9-1-1.  The information is then only available for the amount of time necessary to address the emergency.  Residents have the option to choose what information to share, and what not to share.

To find out more about Smart911, or to register for free, log on to the website www.Smart911.com.
