FREE "Know Your Numbers" Health Screening to be held Tomorrow

COLUMBIA, MO (August 16, 2011) -
Hit the road — Know Your Numbers unit to provide first screenings tomorrow, August 17

Mid-Missouri's brand new Know Your Numbers Mobile Health Unit is about to hit the road for the first time.

The unit will host its first health screenings from 8-11 a.m. tomorrow, August 17 at the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services at 1005 West Worley Street in Columbia. Media members are invited to come tour the unit and learn more about how this will help put mid-Missourians, "on the road to a healthier you."

"We're excited to be involved in such a worthy mission," said Public Health and Human Services Director Stephanie Browning. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Americans spend $1.65 trillion dollars each year treating patients with one or more chronic diseases. "The Know Your Numbers unit will give mid-Missourians the opportunity to take charge of their own health by knowing where they stand currently, and learning about how to get to that healthy range."

The health department is just the first stop on what will be an ongoing journey across mid-Missouri for the Know Your Numbers unit, which is a gift to the community from the Boone Hospital Foundation. Staffed by members of Boone Hospital Center's WELLAWARE service, its mission is to educate people about their "numbers", such as BMI, cholesterol and blood sugar and how to keep those in a healthy range.

"Missouri ranks low on the list of the healthiest states," said Jeff Zimmermann, supervisor of health promotions at Boone Hospital. "We've got a community that wants to be healthy. It's just a matter of educating people and getting them informed and excited about how to do it."
