Boards and commissions applications are available

COLUMBIA, MO (August 18, 2011) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received by the clerk's office, 701 E. Broadway, 2nd floor, by noon on Friday, Sept. 2. Applications are available at the clerk's office or on the city's website at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:  

*The Board of Mechanical Examiners has two vacancies with terms to expire June 17, 2014. One must be a general contractor not in the HVACR business and one must be a HVACR journeyman mechanic. Both must be residents of the city of Columbia. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.  

*The Building Construction Codes Commission has five vacancies with terms to expire Aug. 1, 2012, Aug. 1, 2013, and Aug. 1, 2014. One regular and one alternate electrician are needed. One alternate is also needed from each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in electrical/mechanical), master plumber and fire expert. The commission periodically reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.

*The Citizens Police Review Board has one vacancy with the term to expire Nov. 1, 2012. The member must be a resident of Columbia and a registered voter and cannot be employed by the city, be a party to any pending litigation against the city, be an elected public office holder or be a candidate for elected public office. Members should reflect the cultural and racial diversity of Columbia and have no serious criminal record. A criminal history of applicants of this board will be conducted and the City Council will be advised of any convictions for violations of federal, state or local law. The board reviews appeals from the police chief's decisions on alleged police misconduct, hosts public meetings and educational programs for residents and police officers and reviews and makes recommendations on police policies, procedures and training. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m.  

*The City of Columbia New Century Fund Inc. Board has three vacancies with terms to expire Sept. 30, 2014. Members should have an interest in the future of the city of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future success, and must be current residents and qualified electors of the city of Columbia. The New Century Fund Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit corporation. Meetings are held on call.

*The Columbia Vision Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Dec. 15, 2011, for the coordinating committee. The member must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process. The candidate will be evaluated on the ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, management skills, independence, existing memberships or positions and contributions to the diversity of the commission. The commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process. Meetings held on the last Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

*The Columbia Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire Nov. 1, 2011. The member must be a resident and qualified voter of Ward 5, and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development. Monthly meetings are held on call. 

*The Convention and Visitors Advisory Board has six vacancies with terms to expire Sept. 30, 2012, and September 30, 2013. Two must be owners or operators of a hotel or motel within the city limits, and all shall have demonstrated by past activities an interest in the convention and tourism business. The board shall advise the city on the use of the funds created by the hotel and motel tax. Monthly meetings are held the last Monday at 12 p.m. 

*The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has two vacancies with terms toexpire Oct. 15, 2014. Members assess the user-friendliness and effectiveness of the city's Internet activities. The group makes recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the city's effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held every other month on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.

*The Mayor's Committee on Physical Fitness has one vacancy to be appointed by the mayor with the term to expire Nov. 30, 2012. The committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical fitness activity, and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the community. Meetings are held the first Tuesday every other month at 12:30 p.m.; other meetings are held as needed.

*The Personnel Advisory Board has three vacancies with terms to expire Sept. 30, 2014. Members shall have significant, substantive knowledge of social, legislative, political and administrative factors affecting personnel management and employee relations, and must be residents and registered qualified voters of the city. In addition, members must not hold a lucrative position in city government nor any other lucrative public office during their terms. The board advises the Council on its findings, opinions, various conclusions and recommendations on the status of the personnel system. Meetings are held on call. 

*The Planning and Zoning Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire May 31, 2016. The member must be a qualified voter and resident of the city for at least one year immediately prior to appointment, and shall hold no other office or position in city government. The commission makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning related issues. Meetings are held on the Thursdays following council meeting Mondays at 7 p.m.

*The Public Transportation Advisory Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire March 1, 2012. The commission advises staff with regard to transit policy and safety matters concerning all forms of transit issues affecting the city, studies issues arising under the Columbia Transit Master Plan as they relate to transportation and makes recommendations to the City Council. Meetings are held the last Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
