Embers From Fireplace Set Roof On Fire In Southwest Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (December 18, 2011) - Embers From Fireplace Set Roof On Fire In Southwest Columbia

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 6:25 pm on Sunday, December 18, 2011, to 2609 Limerick Ln, for a reported residential structure fire.

Upon their arrival crews reported fire through the roof. The fire was knocked down quickly but overhaul of the wood shake shingle roof took some time. Crews gained access to the roof via ground ladders and an Aerial Ladder Truck. The fire had burned through the roof and required removal of the affected shingles as well as overhaul of the attic space for embers.

Assistant Fire Marshal Lisa Todd investigated the fire and stated the cause of the fire was embers from the fire place. The owner of the Home Matt Williams was at home with his three children at the time of the fire. He had stepped outside to shake out a rug and noticed more smoke around the house than normal. He investigated further, discovered the fire on the roof, and immediately called 911as he was evacuating the house.  Because of the location of the fire smoke detectors did not sound. Everyone evacuated the structure and there were no injuries as a result of the fire. AFM Todd also issued a preliminary damage estimate of $ 10,000.00.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
